Most people visit our Perth Feng Shui store to broaden their understanding of this amazing subject. They usually know that water is an integral part of Feng Shui. Water is one of the five elements used to balance energy. When placed in the appropriate locations it can enhance creativity and scholastic endeavors, bring romance and even increase notoriety. When placed in the wrong location, though, it can fuel rumors, lawsuits, quarrels or even robberies. It is important to have a Feng Shui evaluation to see where water can best be of use in order to support your well-being. Since water is such an important remedy I wanted to take the time to myth bust one of the most common water remedy misconceptions.
When advising on water remedies, I have had several clients ask about fish.”How many fish do we need in our tank?” “What colors should the fish in my pond be?”
These questions are easily answered, it really doesn’t matter. Fish have no bearing on the water remedy or anything else for that mater. If you enjoy fish then they will enhance your well-being; go ahead and add them to your remedy. If you don’t like fish, or don’t have time to care for fish; then please don’t add them. They will only become a nuisance and that is not the goal of Feng Shui.
In Asian and Chinese culture, fish do play an important role. You have likely seen many works of Asian and Chinese art that portray koi, or goldfish. In China, the fish is symbolic of unity and fidelity as it is noted that fish (particularly koi) often swim together in pairs. With this in mind, fish are often given as wedding gifts in the form of charms or figurines to present the newly-wed couple with an auspicious sign of fidelity and perfect union. They also represent fertility and abundance due to their ability to reproduce in speed and volume. Fish are an aspect of traditional Chinese culture or superstitions that has unfortunately been mixed in with the science of Feng Shui. Hope this has cleared up some of the confusion surrounding Feng Shui fish.
